See the Office of Scholarly Communication's webpages on theses The doctoral thesis must be entirely your own work and should contain material of sufficient originality to merit publication. This material should be adequate to form the basis of, for example, two articles together amounting to 15,–20, words or a short monograph. The thesis must be a connected account of your research Until recently only hardbound copies of theses were collected and catalogued by the University Library, but this changed on 1st October when the Board of Graduate Studies introduced the requirement that all PhD students deposit both a hard copy and an electronic copy of their thesis

What format does my thesis have to be in?
The degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is the University's principal research degree for graduate students and is available in all faculties and departments. A Cambridge PhD is intellectually demanding and you will need to have a high level of attainment and motivation to pursue this programme of advanced study and research The doctoral thesis must be entirely your own work and should contain material of sufficient originality to merit publication. This material should be adequate to form the basis of, for example, two articles together amounting to 15,–20, words or a short monograph. The thesis must be a connected account of your research The thesis must: be written in English, apart from quotations and recognised technical formulae be in A4 portrait format use one-and-a-half spaced type include any photographs or other illustrations scanned into the text be saved in the electronic format and naming style specified by your Degree Committee. Examiners are not expected to edit work
